Root intrusion is one of the most common sewer problems we deal with in older neighborhoods across Franklin County. Washington, Union, Sullivan, Villa Ridge — the mature trees that make these communities beautiful are the same trees quietly working their way into aging sewer lines underground.

Here's what's actually happening, what you can do to slow it down, and when it's time to call a plumber.

Why Do Roots Go Into Pipes in the First Place?

Tree roots don't target your pipes randomly. They're attracted to three things — moisture, oxygen, and nutrients. Your sewer line has all three. Even a hairline crack in an older cast iron or clay pipe releases a small amount of warm, moist vapor into the surrounding soil. Tree roots can detect that from surprisingly far away and will grow toward it.

Once a root finds even the tiniest opening — a joint, a crack, a small gap — it pushes through. Inside the pipe, it finds everything it needs to thrive. It grows, branches out, and over time can fill the entire pipe diameter with a dense root mass.

What Are the Warning Signs?

If you're seeing any of these — especially the recurring clogs — roots are the likely culprit and a drain cleaning alone won't solve the problem long term.

What Can You Actually Do to Slow Root Growth?

Copper Sulfate Root Treatment

This is the most common DIY approach and it does work — with limitations. Copper sulfate crystals flushed down the toilet will kill roots on contact as they flow through the line. You can find it at most hardware stores. Used twice a year it can slow root regrowth after a cleaning.

The limitation: Copper sulfate kills roots it touches but doesn't penetrate deep into the pipe wall or soil. It slows things down but doesn't stop roots that are coming from outside the pipe.

Foaming Root Killers

Products like RootX use a foaming herbicide that coats the pipe walls and kills roots more thoroughly than copper sulfate crystals. It's more effective and works further into the root system. Also available at hardware stores and worth the extra cost over copper sulfate.

Be Smart About What You Plant

If you're landscaping, keep trees and large shrubs well away from your sewer line. The general rule is to plant at a distance at least equal to the tree's mature height. Willows, silver maples, and cottonwoods are the worst offenders — they're water-hungry and have aggressive root systems. If you don't know where your sewer line runs, call 811 before you dig or plant anything significant.

Important: Root treatments slow the problem down — they don't fix a pipe that's already been compromised. If you have recurring backups, the pipe itself needs to be assessed. A camera inspection will show you exactly what you're dealing with.

When Is It Time to Replace the Pipe?

If you're having your drain cleaned every year or two because of roots, you're spending money on a temporary fix. At some point the pipe itself is cracked or deteriorated enough that roots will keep coming back regardless of treatment.

The honest answer is — once roots have caused structural damage to the pipe, the long-term solution is replacement. A cast iron or clay sewer lateral that's been invaded by roots for years is usually cracked in multiple places. Cleaning it buys you time. Replacing it solves the problem.

This is one of those jobs where I give people a straight answer. If your pipe is in good structural condition with minor root intrusion, annual treatment and periodic cleaning is a reasonable approach. If the pipe is deteriorated, I'll tell you that too — because throwing money at drain cleanings on a failing pipe isn't doing you any favors.
